چکیده

The ecological consequences of wetland loss have aroused global interest in recent years. Major advances have been made in describing the relationship between species diversity and ecosystem processes, in identifying functionally important species and in revealing tolerant mechanisms. There is, however, uncertainty as to how results obtained in recent experiments scale up to landscape and regional levels and generalize across ecosystem types and processes. Under stress, a plant has minimal mobility and control of its environment; wetland plants are exposed to environmental conditions outside the range normally exposed due to natural or anthropogenic changes, such as exposure to environmental pollution. The mechanism of defense breakdown and the production of activated oxygen exceed the plant’s capacity to detoxify it, leading to deleterious degenerative occurrences as loss of osmotic responsiveness, wilting and necrosis. A future challenge is to determine how biodiversity dynamics, ecosystem processes and abiotic factors interact. The strengths and limitations of the various measures used to assess the successes of the interaction are now being discussed. This paper reviews the challenges of heavy metals, highlight on challenges of wetland loss and ecosystem processes in a changing environment.

Biodiversity and ecosystem functioning: current knowledge and future challenges.

The ecological consequences of biodiversity loss have aroused considerable interest and controversy during the past decade. Major advances have been made in describing the relationship between species diversity and ecosystem processes, in identifying functionally important species, and in revealing underlying mechanisms. Dynamics of habitat changes as a result of climate change in Zagros Mountains Range (Iran), a case study on Amphibians

Climate change is currently considered a serious threat for many species and recognized as one of the most important factors in the global biodiversity loss. Among animal groups, amphibians are known to be among the most sensitive groups of vertebrates to climate change due to their inability to travel long distances, and mountain habitat species are more exposed to climate change pressures tha...

Assessment of aquatic environmental quality using gyrodactylus sp. as a living probe: parasitic biomonitoring of ecosystem health

Biological indicators are species that can be employed to monitor environmental quality and ecosystem health. Different groups of organisms such as plants, animals, bacteria and parasites regularly produce certain molecular signal in response to changes in their environmental milieu. Parasites are important tools for providing wealth of information on physicochemical quality, environmental stre...

Consumer-driven nutrient dynamics in freshwater ecosystems: an introduction

1. Over the past decade, studies of the effects of consumer-driven nutrient dynamics have become more common. This work has demonstrated that animals can function as sources and sinks of elements, but few studies have broadly compared these processes among organisms and across ecosystems. 2. Collectively, the articles in this special issue elucidate the important roles that organisms can play i...
